Vol. 2 No. 20 (2016): Research Bulletins of the Faculty of Economic Sciences

Zeszyty Naukowe nr 20(2)

We hereby present another issue of the Research Bulletin of the Faculty of Economic Sciences at the Koszalin University of Technology; this is the twentieth issue (no. 20(2)/2016) entitled Middle Pomeranian Province: opportunity for better development. The entire Bulletin is devoted to the issues of Middle Pomerania and the initiative aimed at the creation of the Middle Pomeranian Province. Part of the materials that are presented in this Bulletin were prepared for the Science Conference entitled: Middle Pomeranian Province: opportunity for better development, which was held on 20 January 2016 at the Faculty of Economic Sciences under the patronage of the Rector of the Koszalin University of Technology: Prof. Tadeusz Bohdal, Dr Hab.

The present Bulletin contains texts that were written not only by the members of the research and didactic personnel but also by practitioners and activists. The authors are connected with research centres (the Pomeranian Academy in Słupsk, the University of Mikołaj Kopernik in Toruń and the Koszalin University of Technology) as well as with the local government.

The articles cover a fairly broad range of issues related to the functioning of the Middle Pomerania and the possibilities to establish a new province. These are both economic and social issues. The text deal with the issues of a new division of EU funds, the regional labour market, the settlement network and administrative division, the level of socio-economic development, tax revenues in communes, agricultural farms as well as efforts aimed at the establishment of the Middle Pomeranian Province.

There are two types of texts in this Bulletin. The first group is articles related to Middle Pomerania that actually functions in the Polish socio-economic space. The other group is articles related to the projection of the seventeenth province: the Middle Pomeranian Province. As regards the temporal scope, the authors make references both to historic data (19th  and 20th centuries) and to present-day data. Most of the texts are related to the period of the past 10-15 years.

The members of the Editorial Board do hope that the studies contained in the present issue of the Research Bulletin of the Faculty of Economic Sciences will not only contribute to better understanding of Middle Pomerania but will also become a point of departure for wider discussions related to the justifiability of the creation and functioning of the seventeenth province in Poland. Considering the wide interest in the initiative of the special issue of the Research Bulletins of the Faculty of Economic Sciences, it is to be noted that the problems covered herein are of a particular importance not only to researchers and economic life practitioners but also to the hundreds of thousands of the residents of Middle Pomerania.
